Emotional and Winning Words

26th August, 2010 - Posted by Minter Dial - No Comments

Wordsmithing remains a critical talent.   Whether it is crafting the right slogan, snaring a killer title for your email campaign or cutting down to 140 characters the sweetest tweet, the word is [still] in.  If images and videos generally gain more traction on the ‘net, the filter through which you have to go to get » Share and Enjoy: Read More

Baby Steps and Cool Cars – How to be customer centric AND innovative

18th August, 2010 - Posted by Minter Dial - 1 Comment

A recent paper in the Journal of Product Innovation Management states that, in the ideation phase of new product development, it was found to be better to be technology-focused as the two other approaches (customer centric, competitor focused) generally brought about compromise or smaller product evolutions. At first brush, per the study, being innovative and customer centric seems potentially to be anachronistic. While I can intuitively understand that initial ideation is best driven by a technologically focused team, as the study intimates, the notion of being customer centric remains absolutely vital in ALL other elements of development and execution. How to reconcile being customer centric and innovative? Share and Enjoy: Read More

Why brands must get down and personal – The World According to Apple

15th August, 2010 - Posted by Minter Dial - No Comments

Getting down and personal with your clients and employees is surprisingly foreign for many companies; yet, I maintain that it is going to be an increasingly important element of success for marketers in the future. With the regrouped Apple IOS (i-operating system), customers will be able to swing seamlessly from one product to another. Presumably, the same will be true of other platforms, too. This post discusses how will marketers need to evolve to keep up with these new mobile consumers with interlinked computers, phones and gadgets. Share and Enjoy: Read More

Emotion in a bottle? Washing away the blues!

12th August, 2010 - Posted by Minter Dial - No Comments

I bookmarked this article from the Wall Street Journal, entitled “Wash Away Bad Hair Days,” about P&G’s efforts to recapture consumers who, over the most recent hard times, have cut back on ‘premium’ shampoos, such as Pantene, in favor of lower priced or generic products. In recent years, the article describes how P&G have been doing elaborate testing to evaluate the emotional impact of a shampoo, in an effort to rinse out bad hair days (and the lack of confidence that comes with them). So, then, where is the emotional content in the shampoo marketing campaigns? Share and Enjoy: Read More

Plain Training versus Learning & Growing – 7 key guidelines

31st July, 2010 - Posted by Minter Dial - 2 Comments

It is my belief that continuing education in a company will be one of the distinguishing forces that sorts the great from the good brands. Great education is not just motivating. It is not just a way to improve skills and acquire knowledge. Great education is a fundament to creating a corporate “culture” and transmitting and living corporate values. If innovation, collaboration and fluid communication are vital for creating a successful client-centric organization, a training philosophy that is itself innovative, collaborative and interactive is a great way to set your company on a successful trajectory. Here are 7 important guidelines to making great education. Share and Enjoy: Read More

How Naughty Are You? – Volvo takes a test drive downtown

29th July, 2010 - Posted by Minter Dial - 2 Comments

In a bold marketing coup, related to an effort to remove itself from a “too safe” and “family car” image, Volvo launched its S60 in five cities across Europe and conducted, secretly, an experiment designed to measure the naughtiness of the crowd. Guests — an ‘in’ crowd of BPs, bloggers and celebrities — were invited to find the location via an augmented reality application on layar. Through a sociological lens, it is certainly taking Volvo down a risqué, non politically correct path… in line with its sex symbol logo. Personally, I think it is a great initiative. Social Retail – Boden’s face(book!) is the company. A personal story.

25th July, 2010 - Posted by Minter Dial - 1 Comment

Have you not heard of Johnnie Boden?  Talk about turning your life into a brand! I am impressed with the UK clothing retailer Boden (not to be mixed up with Boden, the store fixtures retailer).   Johnnie Boden, a failed banker-turned-teacher, launched a men’s clothing business in 1991 and created a company, based entirely on his persona » Share and Enjoy: Read More

Your legacy…on Facebook

20th July, 2010 - Posted by Minter Dial - 1 Comment

This is surely not one of the most top-of-mind topics for many people on Facebook; but, after I read yesterday’s Herald Tribune/NY Times article, entitled “Facebook and its users grapple with memorials and persistent ghosts,” I thought again and believe the topic needs airing. I include 4 action points. Share and Enjoy: Read More

Apple – Imperfect imperfections

16th July, 2010 - Posted by Minter Dial - 3 Comments

Steve Jobs has shown himself and the company to have flaws. Every first model seems to come with some flaws and usually Apple manages to turn the situation around, aided by the Apple afficionados. This time, with the iPhone 4, Jobs has not done his customary good job… The imperfections are looking more imperfect. Will these be a turning point? Share and Enjoy: Read More

Government as Guarantor of Privacy?

16th July, 2010 - Posted by Minter Dial - 5 Comments

(Update July 28) With the massive leak of over 91,000 documents from the US Army operations in Afghanistan to wikileaks, the notions of security, confidentiality, privacy and piracy have hit the front pages of mass media around the world.  The role of the internet and the oversight of governments on issues of privacy, in particular, is » Share and Enjoy: Read More
